Gallbladder removal is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the United States. Today, most patients are able to have their gallbladder surgery performed laparoscopically which is minimally invasive. The medical name for this procedure is Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.
In the past, patients that had their gallbladder removed ended up with a large incision and a lot of pain. The average hospital recovery time for a gallbladder surgery patient used to be up to a week. In addition, the patient could not return to normal activities for up to six weeks.
With advancements in gallbladder surgery, patient have minimal scarring as the operation requires only four small openings in the abdomen, called ports. A patient now usually endures minimal postoperative pain and enjoys a significantly faster recovery. Most patients can go home within a day of surgery and can return to normal activities in just a few weeks.
