A hernia is a small sac containing tissue protruding through the abdominal wall. When a hernia occurs there is a noticeable bulge you can see and feel. Hernias can be present at birth or can develop suddenly or over time. The most common hernia is inguinal and develops in the groin. Other common hernias develop around the navel or in an incision from a previous surgery.
Although not all hernias require immediate surgery, a hernia will not disappear on its own. You should consult your surgeon when deciding whether nor not to have surgery to repair your hernia. Although any surgery has risks and side effects, today's surgical treatment options for hernia repairs can usually be completed with minimal discomfort, quick recovery time, and improved long-term effects.
