Pancreatitis
The pancreas regulates sugar balance in the body and aids in the digestive process by producing enzymes that break down food. These enzymes can escape the pancreas if the pancreas becomes damaged. Such damage usually occurs from trauma, manipulation by a surgeon, alcohol, gallstones, or even certain drugs. If the enzymes escape the pancreas, they will break down or digest the tissue surrounding the pancreas. This causes the pancreas to become inflamed, causing terrible abdominal pain that can travel to the back. Pancreatitis is treated with the use of IV fluids and restricting the patient from eating anything by mouth.

If the use of IV fluids does not stop the enzymes from digesting the tissue surrounding the pancreas, pancreatitis can become potentially fatal and surgery will become necessary. Surgery for pancreatitis is difficult surgery and the patient may require several procedures to correct the condition. Dr. Richard A. Prinz is unsurpassed in the field of pancreatic surgery and has had extensive experience with pancreatitis. Schedule an appointment today to determine your surgical needs.
